Federal Reserve Reduces Interest Rates for Second Time This Calendar Year Amid Economic Uncertainty

The US central bank lowered interest rates on midweek, marking the second rate cut in the current year during economic turbulence stemming from the government closure and trade duties.

Move Arrives at Unprecedented Moment for Federal Reserve

The decision to cut the key rate by a 0.25% to a span of 4% to 3.75% comes at an extraordinary moment for the Fed. The authority has been under immense pressure to lower borrowing costs even with ongoing price increases.

Fed Statement Notes Labor Market Changes

In a statement, the Federal Reserve said that the unemployment rate had increased but stays modest. “Job gains have slowed,” the statement reads. “Inflation has risen and remains moderately high.”

Federal Closure Complicates Fed’s Job

The ongoing federal government shutdown, now among the lengthiest in American history, has also complicated the Fed’s job. Collection of key financial statistics has been indefinitely halted as staff at the BLS are furloughed during the closure.

Information Shortage Impacts Policy Decisions

The Fed typically analyzes BLS data to determine labor market conditions, including the number of employment gains added to the market and the present jobless percentage. The most recent employment data was published in the beginning of last month, prior to the shutdown, and provided a relatively bleak overview of the jobs market in August.

The figure of positions created to the market in August was down by over 100k since the spring, and joblessness rose to four point three percent – the peak since 2021.

Private Data Indicate Ongoing Slowdown

Though the bureau was set to release last month’s job market report in early October, it halted its publication when the shutdown started. Private payroll firm a leading payroll processor indicated earlier this month that the business segment eliminated 32,000 jobs in last month, a sign that the employment landscape is continuing to slow.

“Supply as well as demand for labor has declined quite sharply,” Fed chair the Fed chairman said recently, a trend he had previously said comes from trade and immigration measures.

Inflation Report Reveals Moderate Increase

Though the bureau’s jobs report has been suspended, the bureau still issued its price statistics for last month that indicated that costs are going up, albeit gradually. Prices rose three percent over the last year, the peak since January. In spring, the yearly price increase was two point three percent, the lowest it has been since three years ago. The central bank’s goal inflation rate is 2%.
